When I was a student at Nazareth College, the local Pittsford Pub was a great place to walk to grab appetizers with friends, sing some karaoke, or have a couple of drinks. Up until my senior year of college, the Pittsford Pub had been of a more typical pub-like quality, which has since changed dramatically. With an extreme remodel, the Pittsford Pub now looks like your average TGI Fridays interior and the prices have increased dramatically to boot. I hadn't visited the Pub since I'd graduated, so I went with my mom this past weekend to give it another chance.
This post isn't to bash the Pittsford Pub because, after some snafus, problems we had at the restaurant were eventually corrected by the end of our trip. I ordered a craft beer, Founders' Dirty Bastard, and my mom ordered a glass of the house Chardonnay. When our drinks came to us, mine was perfectly filled to the brim of a craft beer glass while my mom's Chardonnay was only filled about an inch high in her glass. Clearly the amount of wine was much less than the typical 4-5 ounce standard pour. And, as expected, she finished her wine in three sips, well before our food came out of the kitchen. I told my mom that I would order another glass of wine for her and, because I'm incredibly obnoxious, I asked them how much wine they usually fill the wine glasses with and they replied 4 ounces. I showed them where the last glass was filled and they didn't really say much else about it; but, lo and behold, when they brought the second glass it was filled to a more correct and satisfiable volume.
We weren't particularly hungry, so we decided to order the appetizer sampler platter which consisted of buffalo wings, fried mozzarella, onion rings, and chicken tenders. The platter was a hefty $14 but had tons of food and dipping sauces included, which was the perfect combination and amount to munch on while casually watching the Final Four NCAA Tournament. The only disappointment on the whole platter were the buffalo wings, which appeared to be really dry and somehow snapped apart at the bone leaving small nubs of chicken at the ends.
As we were nearing the end of chowing down on our platter, the restaurant manager walked by asking each table how everything was going. As he passed our table, we initially told him that everything was delicious, which was true. But again, because I'm obnoxious, and also a huge chicken wing fan, when he made the return back toward the kitchen, I decided to show him the broken off chicken nubs that were too strange looking for us to eat. I simply wasn't sure if they were normal for the restaurant, or if there was a faulty batch of chicken in the kitchen which I should maybe inform him of. He seemed extremely surprised by them and went back into the kitchen to find out.
When he returned, he told us that the chef had noticed the faulty batch of chicken but didn't really do anything about it. He also came bearing a fresh batch of six sauce-covered wings plated with celery and carrot garnish, ten times better looking than the wings we had received. They looked like they had come from a completely different restaurant! We thanked him very much and told him that he didn't have to do that. We also left a nice tip as well. My mom and I were already so full, however, so I took the wings home and put them in my freezer to throw in the oven on a bad day when I really need them. Overall, it was a nice night out at the Pittsford Pub and, while there were a couple of ordering flubs, it was worth the trip to one of my newly renovated old haunts, sans its old charm. There were plenty of great looking TVs to watch games which, I'm sure, was the incentive for most of its customer base.
If you don't take your wings and wine as seriously as I do, I'm sure you would enjoy it just fine. The Pittsford Pub's website is currently down, but they do have a Facebook page. They are located at 60 N. Main Street in Pittsford, NY and are open Monday through Wednesday until 12AM, Thursday until 12:30AM, Friday until 2AM, Saturday until 1:30AM, and Sunday until 10:30PM. But, honestly, next time I'm looking for a drink in Pittsford, I think I'll head over to Thirsty's.
